Grand Rapids Michigan Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city that blends the commerce and culture together perfectly. This the second largest city in the state of Michigan, only surpassed by Detroit. Grand Rapids has a population of almost 200,000 people. The area was settled by Native Americans and Europeans who leaved there peacefully in the 19th Century. Most of the immigrants were part of the fur trade as well as missionaries.
Grand Rapids became a city in 1850. It had a successful lumber business as well as made furniture. The furniture continues to prosper and it is nicknamed the Furniture City. Over time, the area has become more modernized. There are a few colleges and universities in eh area that are known for health research programs. The airport was one of the first for passenger flights. There is also the DeVos Place Convention Center.
Sports are very well received in Grand Rapids. The Van Andel Arena is the home to the Griffins Ice Hockey Team as well as the Rampage Arena Football Team. The arena is a great venue to catch a concert at as well. There are great radio stations to choose from with a variety of music that includes jazz, rock, country, and Christian. Let’s not forget the great talk shows either.
The city has plenty of culture to offer as well. The annual arts festival with great shows and exhibits is always well attended. The Celebration on the Grand features great live entertainment with a spectacular fireworks display. The City Museum and Sculpture Park offer a great display of the history of the city. Children in Grand Rapids love going to the John Bull Park. It offers a great playground as well as a zoo. As you can see Grand Rapids offers something for all including the arts, natural history, education, and sports. The city will continue to grow and change with the times. |
